MEDIUM - Oil on canvas
I am an emerging artist having completed a Diploma of Visual Arts in 2006 and I am currently working on a body of work "HEAD TO HEAD" for a solo exhibition at BSG Fitzroy in October.
I paint portraits. My subjects are human landscapes of family and friends. They are on a large scale and my images are slightly pixellated with a rich tapestry of juicy and colourful paint surfaces and complex tonal values. The pixellation in my work gives it a form of ambiguity I like and gives the viewer the opportunity to take their own journey within my work.
Working from a photograph of the sitter I transfer the image on to the canvas. In my earlier work I used a grid method - this embellished the pixellated appearance of my paintings. My later work is more indicative of impressionism but with a contemporary touch. Both methods are a formalist approach, but a very powerful tool which explores colour, shape, texture, pattern and rhythm in a highly structured and stylised composition
On completion of my paintings I believe I have captured the sitters personality and soul that I wish to share with the viewer. The cult of their personality has evolved.
