Marilyn began studying art in 1978 at Caulfield Institute of Technology, Melbourne, where she completed a diploma in Art and Ceramic Design. Her desire to live in the country brought her to South Gippsland, where she made and taught ceramics part-time. Marilyn"s increasing interest in the decoration of her pots led her to painting. She returned to study at Monash University, Churchill, completing a degree in Visual Arts in 2006. Living on a dairy farm in South Gippsland has allowed Marilyn"s work to develop osmotically; her work is intuitive and visceral. She references the female in the rural land- and seascape, examining her relationship to her environment. She uses various media in her paintings to explore issues of connectedness, to each other, to the land and to self. This spiritual connection with the land and the people who live in it is her inspiration for her work, sometimes expressing the turmoil of existence, attempting to discover the beauty within. Marilyn"s technique pushes the boundaries of paint and other media; investigating the different layers of existence by building up and rubbing back layers on the canvas, line is sometimes used in her work as a metaphor for journeys. Marilyn has exhibited at Cowwarr Art Space, Meeniyan Art Gallery, Stockyard Gallery Foster, Switchback Gallery Churchill, Gehko Studio Gallery Fish Creek, her work has been showcased at Monash University functions. Reacting to the pressures of living in a modern world, she is continually exploring the "space in between" and "the stillness often lost in lives". This exploration produces fresh and exciting work.
