Libby Witchell

Libby Witchell is a painter whose work for many years was traditional. Libby has beenenjoying pushing the boundaries, exploring and experimenting with style andcontent, working with mixed mediums, overlaying surfaces to create energy and intrigue.

Libby works from her studio in Traralgon where she also teaches drawing and painting to students of all ages.  She was born and raised on a farm and continues to be involved in farming.

Libby has a Diploma of Visual Arts and a Graduate Diploma in Education. She has taught Secondary School Art, Graphic Communication and Ceramics and Woodwork.

Some of Libby’s achievements include painting murals, stage sets, producing Gippsland Greeting Cards, participating in solo and group exhibitions throughout Gippsland and Melbourne, also Beechworth, especially over recent years.

Libby’s paintings are a mixture of traditional super realist technique and a fluency with contemporary styles and mediums.  Libby likes exploring and experimenting with style and content, working with mixed mediums, overlaying surfaces to create energy and intrigue.  Libby doesn’t like to limit herself to a particular medium so there is a wide variety of applications, choosing the one that best fits the task, trying to mesh the contemporary and realist techniques.  Looking for greater expression and painting with passion!

Libby has a love of the outdoors, especially Gippsland.  This explains her interest in old rural icons, taking a glimpse through a window to the past and participating in the reflection.  Renditions of windows, rusty iron, droughts, bushfires and surface textures all part of the artists lifestyle.  Libby also likes the challenge of portraiture, and plein air painting.

Libby's work is always evolving recent works are a blend of extremes between super realism and contemporary abstraction and an intermingling of the two.
